Chapter 20
Hannah
The next afternoon, I stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom as I got myself beach-ready. We’d spent the morning eating breakfast, taking showers, and hanging out in hopes of avoiding Logan and Valerie while they were at the beach all morning. I knew that Logan hated lying out on the beach all day. He found it boring. If I knew him as well as I thought I did, they would probably be coming back to the beach house as we were leaving.
That was what I was hoping, at least. Because the last thing I wanted was to run into him, especially when I was wearing a bathing suit. I glanced at myself in the mirror again.
I took a deep breath and exhaled nervously. Why had I let Teagan talk me into buying a bikini? It was the first time in years that I hadn’t gone with a tankini. Even though it seemed like a good idea at the time, the thought of bumping into Logan—and, even worse, Valerie—while I was wearing it made me feel like a nervous wreck.
“You can do this. It’s just a bathing suit,” I told my reflection in the mirror.
I heard a muffled, “Yes, you can! You’re adorable. I don’t know why you’re so worried about wearing it.”
I opened the bathroom door and poked my head into the bedroom. “What are you doing?” I asked Matt, who had been standing on the other side of the door.
“Just helping you out with your little pep talk.” He flashed me a grin. “And I need help with my sunscreen,” he added, showing me the huge bottle of Banana Boat he’d brought into my room.
“Oh, I completely forgot about bringing sunscreen.” Who forgot to bring sunscreen when they went to the beach? I had been much less prepared for this trip than I’d realized.
“You can borrow mine,” he replied as he slathered some of it onto his arms.
I went back into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. “You know, there was a perfectly good tankini I tried, but I just had to listen to Teagan’s advice and bought this one,” I said loudly, half to myself and half to Matt, as I eyed myself in the mirror again. The tankini had been cute and, more importantly, modest. And not only that, but it had also been easier to put on. The floral print bikini I’d ended up with tied at the neck and had two thin straps that hooked together in the back with a piece of flimsy plastic. The string-tie bottoms also showed way more thigh than I was comfortable with.
Once I had both pieces on, I looked at myself in the mirror again. I didn’t look bad—or, at least, not bad in my opinion. It was just that I wasn’t used to wearing something so revealing. I wasn’t sure if I would get more comfortable with it in time. Though, speaking of comfort…how was I supposed to sit down in this thing?
I was at an average weight.
